In the heart of Florida, communities have always embodied the spirit of resilience and solidarity. When hurricanes Milton and Helene swept through, they left behind not just damaged homes, but also a tremendous opportunity for neighbors to come together and support each other in extraordinary ways.

In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Helene, stories emerged of neighbors pooling their resources to clear debris and provide temporary shelter. Families who had generators shared power with those who were left in the dark, ensuring that the elderly and those with young children had access to necessary amenities. The neighborhood kitchens became communal, with barbecues and potlucks replacing traditional meals, as people cooked together and shared food to ensure no one went hungry.

Then, as Hurricane Milton followed on the heels of its predecessor, the community's response was swift and efficient, almost as though they had rehearsed for this. Social media became a powerful tool for coordination, with residents using neighborhood apps and groups to organize relief efforts. Volunteer groups formed organically, focusing on various tasks such as clearing fallen trees, distributing supplies, and providing emotional support to those in shock from the double impact of the storms.

The local businesses stepped up as well. Hardware stores offered free equipment rentals and home repair workshops. Restaurants provided free meals to first responders and displaced families. Schools and churches opened their doors as shelters and community hubs, providing safe spaces for people to gather, share information, and find solace.

But the true heroes were the first respondents. These brave men and women risked their lives, working tirelessly to rescue those trapped in their homes and clear the roads for emergency vehicles. Despite the overwhelming devastation, they showed an unwavering dedication to their community. They navigated through flooded streets, battled treacherous winds, and worked round the clock, often without sleep, to ensure everyone's safety.

What truly shone through these challenging times was the incredible tenacity of the human spirit. Despite the overwhelming devastation, the people of Florida demonstrated that their strength lies in unity. These storms brought out not just neighbors helping neighbors, but also the phenomenal support from fellow Americans across State lines. Communities rallied together, and we witnessed an inspiring display of resilience and compassion. With helping hands from all over, they lit up not just their homes, but the entire state with hope and determination. This is the true spirit of Florida: United, strong, and unstoppable.

In the last several years we had Hurricanes that destroyed structures on barrier islands.

Some of the structures have been rebuilt more than once.
